Nasheed unable to travel abroad

Former President Mohamed Nasheed has been stopped by the Immigration Department when he went to the airport this evening to go abroad. Nasheed had been granted permission by the High Court to leave the country from tomorrow onwards.
Speaking to Sun Online, Chief Executive Officer of Immigration Department Abdul Gafoor Ahmed said that Nasheed went to the airport at around 6:00 pm today.
He said that Nasheed’s passport was checked, and it showed that neither the Hulhumale’ Magistrate Court nor the High Court had released his passport.
Abdul Gafoor said that subsequently, the Immigration Department contacted the Registrar of High Court, who said that a written permit to depart the country had been issued to Nasheed.
He said that the permit issued by the High Court stated that Nasheed is allowed to travel abroad from 15 April onwards, and that Nasheed was thus informed that he cannot depart today.
MDP has said that the purpose of Nasheed’s trip is to give a lecture on ‘How can we build a carbon neutral economy?’ organised by the Sustainability Science Centre of the University of Copenhagen.
