Charges pressed against a man who threatened Speaker Nasheed

Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO) has pressed charges against a man who issued death threats against Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed.
PGO revealed three charges were pressed against Ismail Yafis, who issued death threats against Speaker Nasheed on social media in August. Yafis is alleged to have threatened to assassinate the speaker if he returned to the Maldives following treatment to injuries sustained during the May 6 attack.
Yafis was arrested following the threats, after which he issued threats again while he was brought to a remand hearing. Following the threat issued at court, he was sentenced him to one month in prison for contempt of court.
PGO revealed three charges have been pressed against Yafis under the Prevention of Terrorism Act, including one for threatening to commit an act of terrorism, one for encouraging an act of terrorism and one for endorsing a terrorism organisation. The last charge was pressed in relation to writings posted by Yafis to social media in 2020, indicating his allegiance to the Islamic State terrorist organisation.
