Maldives’ Healthcare Infrastructure Secured for Next 20 Years, Says Minister Nazim

The Maldivian health sector is undergoing an unprecedented infrastructure transformation, with over 160 development projects currently underway, promising to eliminate infrastructure difficulties for the next two decades, the Minister of Health, Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim has said.
Minister Nazim made this declaration during an appearance on PSM News' "Hafthaa 104" programme to mark the second anniversary of the incumbent administration, asserting that these initiatives will provide the necessary foundation for the nation's healthcare system.
He highlighted that the biggest obstacle to expanding health services in the Atolls has historically been the lack of adequate space, often exacerbated by old and rundown buildings. Public concerns regarding these issues have frequently been voiced during President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s visits to the islands, prompting a robust response with numerous projects awarded over the past two years to address these pressing needs.
"More than 160 projects are underway under the Health Ministry alone, with 25 projects in the initial stage. When these projects are completed, there will be no problem for the infrastructure of the Atolls for the next 10 to 20 years,” he explained.
Minister Nazim specified that 165 infrastructure development projects are currently under the Ministry of Health’s direct supervision.
The comprehensive development drive includes the construction of extension buildings for health centres to bolster regional health services and the establishment of new hospitals to broaden treatment options. Additionally, regional hospitals are undergoing significant upgrades, and the quality of healthcare facilities in areas designated as urban centres is being enhanced.
Alongside physical infrastructure, the government remains committed to equipping these hospitals with essential resources and human capital. Crucially, the expansion covers specialised services such as laboratory facilities, CT scan, MRI, X-ray services, mammography, and dialysis, ensuring a more comprehensive and accessible healthcare system for all Maldivian citizens.
