Sheet piling to begin as Malé Local Market area road upgrades advance

Significant infrastructure upgrades along a key route in Male’ City are currently progressing, with sheet piling work set to begin later this month.
The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), which is undertaking development of a critical 250-metre stretch from the local market area to the North Harbour, has announced the next phase of work as road construction continues.
The project, which began on 9 October, is presently focused on road development alongside essential utility network upgrades. MTCC Senior Project Manager Sharvas Abdulla Faiz told PSM News that 70 per cent of the work has already been completed, with network upgrade works by the Male' Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) scheduled to begin shortly.
As part of the development, the road is being widened to six metres. Faiz confirmed that sheet pile installation — a key component for shoreline protection and land reclamation — is expected to commence by the end of this month, with dredging work carried out simultaneously.
To facilitate construction, MTCC is closing a section of the road after midnight, while warning that further closures may be implemented as work progresses.
The project is being carried out under the wider Boduthakurufaanu Magu development plan. Phase One, covering a 140-metre section, has already been completed and opened to the public. Once finished, the project will revitalise a 1,088-metre corridor extending from the Henveiru Ferry Terminal to the North Harbour.
Road closures and temporary traffic flow changes are expected during the construction period. MTCC states that the current phase of the project is scheduled to be completed before Ramadan, after which the upgraded infrastructure will be opened to the public.
