Maldives, EU Discuss Strengthening Cooperation in Sustainable Fisheries and Trade

Special Envoy of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu and former President Dr Mohamed Waheed Hassan has held talks with the European Commissioner for Fisheries and Oceans, Costas Kadis, to strengthen Maldives-European Union (EU) cooperation in sustainable fisheries and trade.
The meeting was held on the sidelines of the Global Tourism Forum Annual Meeting 2025, in Brussels.
Discussions during the meeting focused on enhancing cooperation between the Maldives and the European Union in areas of mutual interest, including sustainable fisheries practices and trade.
Emphasising the significance of the fisheries sector to the Maldivian economy, the Special Envoy highlighted the need for fair market access to ensure a level playing field. Both parties agreed on the importance of sustainable fisheries management and collaboration in addressing illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing.
Concluding the meeting, both sides expressed their commitment to further strengthening the longstanding partnership between the Maldives and the European Union for mutual growth and sustainable development.
