Electricity has been restored to L. Gan after nearly eight hours of blackout caused by a fire at the Fenaka power plant.
The fire broke out at 14:45 hrs on Wednesday and was extinguished by 15:50 hrs, according to police. While no injuries were reported, the engine room sustained damage that initially prevented resupply of electricity.
Gan Council President Ahmed Zaki said the engines were serviced at 22:30 hrs, allowing power to be supplied to some areas. Council Member Abdullah Shuaau later confirmed that electricity has since been restored across the entire island.
Zaki earlier quoted employees at the power plant as saying the fire first started in the chimney and spread despite efforts to contain it from inside the powerhouse.
The blaze damaged one of the five engines supplying electricity to the island. Fenaka Corporation said it has identified the problems caused by the incident and is working to resolve them.
It is notable how in the aftermath of the fire, multiple agencies and the local community worked together to restore electricity. Fenaka engineers coordinated closely with the police, council officials, and emergency responders, while islanders themselves assisted by providing logistical support and helping manage the heavy traffic around the powerhouse. This joint effort ensured that power was restored more quickly and safely despite the damage.
Police confirmed that no injuries were reported and that they are investigating the incident.
