Fayyaz emphasises need for unity to strengthen party

The opposing Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s Chairperson, Fayyaz Ismail, has stated that despite disagreements and dissatisfactions, working together is the only way to move forward to reunite the party.
In his first press conference held after several high-profile defectors rejoined the party, Fayyaz said the MDP was weakened in an internal rift ahead of the 2023 election. Fayyaz was referring to the formation of a new political party led by former President Mohamed Nasheed and his supporters after Nasheed’s defeat in the MDP’s presidential primary. Fayyaz said the party could have handled the situation in a better way.
Fayyaz further said those working in politics must learn not to take such incidents to heart and to continue with their political journey.
He said he should learn to work politically without such things in mind.
"We do have some apprehension. There is dissatisfaction not only among us, but among those rejoining as well,” Fayyaz said.
Fayyaz said he believes that the party’s situation will improve and settle in the coming days and emphasised the need to strengthen the MDP to steer the Maldives in a better direction. The MDP will soon become stronger with its reunification, he said.
