Government Begins Work to Establish Biosphere Reserves in Faafu and Laamu Atolls

Environment Minister Tariq Ibrahim has announced that preparations are underway to establish biosphere reserves in Faafu Atoll and Laamu Atoll, as part of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s pledge to strengthen environmental protection and sustainable development across the Maldives.
Speaking at a ceremony held in L. Gan to mark World Environment Day, Minister Tariq said the initiative aligns with the President’s five-year commitment to designate three new biosphere reserves and nature parks in different parts of the country.
According to the Minister, preliminary studies are already underway in Faafu Atoll to assess the feasibility of establishing a biosphere reserve, while groundwork is progressing in Laamu Atoll.
Currently, the Maldives has three designated biosphere reserves: Baa Atoll, Addu City, and Fuvahmulah City. The planned additions in Faafu and Laamu would further expand the country’s network of protected areas.
Biosphere reserves are recognized for their role in promoting sustainable development, conserving biodiversity, and supporting environmentally responsible economic activities, while enhancing the well-being of local communities.
