The Maldives Media and Broadcasting Commission (MMBC) has stated that developing media institutions into financially independent and strong entities is one of its main objectives.
The Commission made this statement in a message issued to mark World Press Freedom Day.
The Maldives Media and Broadcasting Commission noted that, as this year’s Press Freedom Day is observed, the Maldives is ranked 108th in the press freedom index. Compared to last year, this reflects a change, and the Commission highlighted that efforts are ongoing to improve this ranking further and to strengthen the media sector.
This year’s theme for Press Freedom Day, set by UNESCO, is: "Shaping a Future at Peace: Promoting Press Freedom for Human Rights, Development, and Security"
Reflecting on this theme, the Commission emphasised that press freedom is not merely about the ability to publish or broadcast freely. It is a fundamental pillar of a peaceful society, essential for safeguarding human rights and fostering sustainable development. The Commission further noted that journalists serve as the “fourth estate,” playing a crucial role in holding the government accountable and empowering citizens without bias.
The Commission also highlighted that significant efforts have been made in recent days to advance the future of media in the Maldives. These include introducing new standards of conduct, as well as establishing updated regulations and policies related to media, with the aim of building financially independent and resilient media institutions. Ensuring the safety of journalists and providing necessary modern training opportunities were also identified as key priorities.
Additionally, the Commission stressed that press freedom comes with equal responsibilities and accountability. It is not only a right of journalists and media professionals but also a right of the public. Therefore, in disseminating information, adherence to ethical standards set by the Commission is essential.
The Commission reaffirmed its commitment to working alongside journalists and media organisations to address challenges faced in the field and to safeguard press freedom at all times.
Strengthening financial independence of media is a key goal: MMBC
