Minister Calls for Sustainable Ocean Use at World Oceans Day Event

The Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources, Ahmed Shiyam, has emphasised the importance of protecting the oceans and increasing the benefits derived from the ocean in a sustainable manner. The Minister made the remarks in an interview with PSM News at the Moodhu Fest event held to mark the World Oceans Day.
The Minister noted that the main purpose of the Moodhu Fest event was to encourage as many people as possible to engage and interact with the ocean. He noted the importance of the current generation experiencing the ocean and carrying it forward for the next generation. He also emphasised that the seas should be protected and that the benefits of the oceans should be derived in a sustainable manner.
The Minister noted that President Dr Mohamed Muizzu strongly encourages the celebration of World Oceans Day. He noted ongoing efforts to address the challenges facing the Maldives’ fisheries sector, adding that special priority is given to building people in the fisheries field to conduct marine research.
"The President encourages us to make decisions based on research. We refer to research as the foundation of our decisions in maritime matters. We are trying to align our decisions with research,” the Minister said.
One of the highlights of the Moodhu Fest was the Discover Dive, which was aimed at giving children the opportunity to experience the beauty of the ocean. While 40 children were given diving opportunities as part of the event, certificates were awarded to all participants and sponsors.
The children who participated in the Discover Dive noted that they saw a variety of colorful coral reefs and fish during the dive, and noted their pleasure at the opportunity to participate in the dive.
The event was attended by the Fisheries Minister as well as the Chinese Ambassador to the Maldives. Several stalls were set up to hold various activities related to the ocean, including stalls by the Ministry, government agencies, businesses, environmental NGOs and food vendors.
