President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has stated that it is a national duty to ensure the well-being and happiness of senior citizens, acknowledging their significant contributions to the nation's development and stability. He made these remarks during the Presidential Address at the opening session of the People's Majlis for 2025.
The President highlighted that, as promised, 294 activities have been organised for senior citizens through the establishment of the 'Isravvehinge Naadhee' in Male'. He also mentioned that the 'Isravvehinge Hiyaavahi' would be set up in Addu City, Feydhoo, under a public-private partnership.
The President emphasised the importance of maintaining the happiness and dignity of senior citizens and those requiring special care. Special programmes have been designed for these individuals, which will be launched in five atolls across the country this year.
Reiterating the provision of special healthcare for the elderly as a key focus of his presidential manifesto, the President noted that from the first quarter of last year, OPD services were introduced two days a week at the department dedicated to senior citizens. He mentioned that, as of December 31, 2024, 820 beneficiaries had accessed this service.
The President reaffirmed his commitment to training individuals to provide care for senior citizens in vulnerable situations at the island level. He highlighted that 226 social mentors have been trained in five atolls and 43 islands under the 'Ibama' programme, with plans to expand the programme to five more atolls this year.
President also noted that a system has been implemented to track the full information of all individuals above the age of 65 and those with disabilities within the Maldivian population.
Emphasising the importance of care and compassion, the President announced the launch of a programme called 'Konme Kujjakah Aailaaeh' in 2024 for children in state care. He highlighted that, under this initiative, 65 children have already been provided with a family environment, to offer a nurturing family setting for those living in state care.
The President also introduced a special programme this year to provide life skills and work training to children in state care, to prepare them to become responsible citizens and integrate into society.
