Initial deliberations regarding the permanent relocation of the residential community of Hirimaradhoo, Haa Dhaalu Atoll, to Hanimaadhoo within the same atoll are progressing favourably, according to Adam Shareef Umar, the Minister of Cities, Local Government, and Public Works. He disclosed this development following his recent visits to both Hanimaadhoo and Hirimaradhoo, where he engaged in discussions with the respective island councils and residential communities.
The relocation request was initially submitted by the residents of Hirimaradhoo in September 2024, with deliberations beginning in October of the same year. Subsequently, on 1 February, the administration announced its approval of the community's request for permanent relocation to Hanimaadhoo.
Minister Umar highlighted that the deliberations with the local councils of both islands had received substantial support and cooperation from the residential communities. During his meeting with the Hanimaadhoo Council, council members underscored the need to further improve essential services for the island's residents.
During his visit to Hirimaradhoo, Minister Umar met with the local council and residential community to solicit their ideas and discuss the implications of the move. The purpose of these visits was to gather insights and ensure that the relocation process effectively addresses the concerns and expectations of both communities.
Hirimaradhoo, characterised by its small population, has faced developmental challenges. Although there are 500 registered residents, a significant proportion live off the island. The current residents have sought relocation to an island offering better essential services. Notably, the elderly population on Hirimaradhoo exceeds the youth population, leading to increased dependence on foreign migrant workers, a growing concern within the community.
Minister Umar earlier confirmed that discussions on the procedural aspects of the relocation are ongoing. He also assured that a comprehensive roadmap would be developed to facilitate the move, with physical relocation efforts set to commence as soon as possible.
