Minister Shainee meets UN delegation in Maldives

The envoy from United Nation’s Political Affairs on Tuesday met with Minister of Fisheries and chair of all-party talks Dr Mohamed Shainee. The team with leading members of the UN political affairs arrived to the Maldives in an attempt to find a solution to the on-going political crisis in the country.
Senior Political Officer of the UN Department of Political Affairs Mr Shin Umezu, and resident UN coordinator Shoko Noda, along with two members of the UN Department of Political Affairs met with the fisheries minister in order to discuss the concerns around the current political situation in the Maldives.
The UN delegation had earlier met with opposition party leaders and lawyers of political detainees who expressed their concerns over the government and the current political situation.
In addition to talks with the opposition, the team from UN had also met with the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives.
The international community has been constantly calling on the Maldivian government to solve the issues in the country through discussions involving the UN as a mediator. The state and opposition parties, however, have not been successful in holding all-party talks to solve the current political situation.
