The Criminal Court cancelled the trial of one of three charges against Jumhoory Party’s leader Qasim Ibrahim scheduled for Sunday after the latter was hospitalised the same day.
The court had slotted a hearing of a bribery charge against Qasim for 2:00 p.m. Sunday afternoon. However, it was later cancelled after Qasim was admitted to Medica Hospital around 12:45 p.m. due to shortness of breath and chest pain.
The court had also scheduled a preliminary hearing last Friday which was also cancelled.
The state is pressing three charges against the lawmaker of Maamigili constituency for attempted bribery, coercion with regards to official duties and undue influence on voters in connection to the previous motion of no confidence submitted by the opposition against the parliament speaker.
The case was previously thrown out after the prosecution failed to turn up for the hearing. The Criminal Court scheduled the new trials after the Prosecutor General’s Office resubmitted the case.
