Minister of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure Dr Abdulla Muththalib has warned that delays in implementation are hindering efforts to provide housing for families in need.
Speaking at the foundation laying ceremony of a 182-unit housing project in Hulhumalé, the minister said every moment lost creates obstacles to delivering homes for those without adequate housing.
He noted that it is particularly difficult for young families to plan their future without the prospect of owning a home.
Under the government’s “Housing for All” policy, priority is given to families without housing, with the objective of providing security and opportunities for a better future, he said. The minister added that the housing project initiated by the Bank of Maldives in collaboration with the government reflects the role of a national bank in supporting social development.
“A government is elected to improve the quality of life of the people, not to waste time due to political obstacles or complete its term without delivering results,” Dr Muththalib said. He also highlighted the public’s expectations for essential infrastructure, including housing, water and sewerage systems, and harbour development.
The minister said the proposal to hold presidential and parliamentary elections on the same day is aimed at ensuring that the elected government can fully utilise its mandate without disruptions caused by overlapping political cycles.
He noted that some planned initiatives in the government’s first year were delayed due to a budget passed by the previous parliament without aligning with the current administration’s agenda, resulting in setbacks in service delivery.
The minister reiterated that delays directly affect families awaiting housing and undermine public expectations for improved services. He described the Hulhumalé housing project as an example of progress that can be achieved through focused efforts and collaboration, despite ongoing financial challenges.
The minister added that under President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s leadership, multiple initiatives are being implemented to improve living standards and address key public needs.
Each delay hampers providing housing
