The Prosecutor General pressed charges of obstructing police against former Police Commissioner and lawmaker of Kinbidhoo constituency Abdulla Riyaz last Tuesday.
Riyaz, who is also the Deputy Leader of Jumhoory Party (JP), denied all accusations early Wednesday in a tweet he posted.
Prosecutor General (PG) Office’s spokesperson said that Riyaz was charged according to Subject 532 of the Penal Code for purposefully obstructing an officer of law enforcement.
If Riyaz is found guilty, he will be sentenced to a minimum period of one month and six days or maximum one year.
While the news of his charge has emerged, some say that he is soon going to be taken under Police Custody.
Riyaz was last summoned to Maldives Police Service over attempt to spread false information. While Police have confiscated his mobile phone with a court order, Riyaz could not provide his lock code. Henceforth, he was accused of another offence which is believed to be sent to court.
