President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has on Thursday addressed a message to the Government of the State of Palestine on the occasion of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People.
President Solih’s message reiterates the longstanding support and commitment of the people and government of both countries in their struggle for greater recognition, justice, peace and security.
President Solih on behalf of the government wrote that “our support for Palestine stems from our belief in the supremacy of the rule of law, and the obligation of every nation to abide by international law.”
“The establishment of an independent and sovereign State of Palestine based on the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital, living side by side and in peace with Israel, is the only viable and internationally accepted solution to the Question of Palestine. That is the solution that the UN Security Council, in particular, Resolutions 242 of 1967, 338 of 1973, and 2334 of 2016, demand.”
President Solih in his message wrote that the Maldives calls on Israel and the international community, at large, to fully implement the relevant UN Security Council resolutions in its entirety as well as to fully respect the legal obligations it undertook in the Oslo Accords, the Arab Peace Initiative and the Quartet Roadmap.
“We also believe that a lasting peace can only be achieved through a negotiated final settlement by both sides that would end the cycle of violence and bloodshed, and allow for the full establishment of a two-state solution.”
Highlighting that Maldives will forever remain steadfast in its support for Palestine and its people, in their struggle for dignity, justice and peace, President Solih wrote that the international community should strengthen the resolve to the cause of peace and justice, renounce violence as well as reject oppression and occupation as instruments of foreign policy, as the 71st anniversary of the adoption of the UN plan to partition Palestine is celebrated.
The day, marked annually on the 29th of November, marks the anniversary of a resolution passed by the UN General Assembly in 1947.
