MDP President questions the validity of ongoing Party protests
Dr. Didi, President of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), has questioned the official validity of his party’s ongoing protests at the Victory Square in Malé. According to reports, a huge rift has been formed between him and some of the other leaders of the party over the matter. Dr. Didi told Sun that MDP protests that began on Friday were to be continued until 12 midnight that day as per the resolution passed by Party’s National Council, and that continuation of the protest after 12 was not in accordance with the National Council resolution. “The mass rally conducted by MDP on the 17th of this month was conducted under a National Council resolution, which stated that it would be continued until 12 midnight. After that time, activities were continued in the area, but they were not officially MDP activities”, said Didi. While Party President Dr. Didi insists that MDP protests ended at 12 midnight on Friday, former President and MDP’s real leader Mohamed Nasheed visited the protest and addressed the crowd after 12. MDP’s Spokesperson, and parliamentarian Imtiaz Fahmy’s opinion is very different. Imtiaz told Sun today that MDP protests and activities continued after 12 midnight on Friday have been in accordance with Party’s National Council resolution. “I do not know that Didi had said anything against the ongoing activities”, Imtiaz said. MDP began a mass rally under the theme, “Journey of Justice”, a few days after their leader Mohamed Nasheed was forced to resign when the Maldives Police Service and the Maldives National Defence Force joined hands with the people in protesting Nasheed’s continued violations of the Constitution, enforced disappearance of a Judge, and outright statements of favoritism for his own party members.
