President says legal reforms yielding positive results in fight against drugs

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has said the legal amendments and regulations introduced to combat the drug problem are already delivering positive results, while strengthening cooperation among relevant agencies to tackle drug-related crimes.
In a message marking the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, the President said the reforms represent a significant step towards addressing the drug problem comprehensively and improving the enforcement of laws and penalties through closer inter-agency cooperation.
Describing drug abuse as a major social, moral and economic challenge, President Muizzu said it also poses a threat to national security. He called on all state institutions to work together to combat the issue.
The President said the Maldives' efforts this year would align with the International Day's theme, "World Drug Problem: Persistent Issues, New Challenges, Innovative Responses." He described this as an important step towards safeguarding the country's future and protecting its younger generation.
President Muizzu said amendments to the Drug Act and strengthened regulations provide clear direction for the work of relevant agencies. He said the government's objective is to prevent drug traffickers from entering the Maldives, bring offenders before the courts and ensure they receive the punishment prescribed by law.
The President also called on families, communities, non-governmental organisations and the private sector to work together to build a drug-free society. He urged the public to promote positive values and lifestyles while helping to prevent people from turning to drugs.
He added that the Maldives would continue working with regional countries to address the drug problem through existing partnerships and cooperation.
The President said the government is continuing efforts to strengthen drug-related legislation, increase penalties for drug offences and improve treatment services for people recovering from addiction.
He also noted that rehabilitation centres are currently being developed in three regions of the Maldives as part of the government's efforts to tackle the drug problem.
