Parliament to Debate No-Confidence Motion Against Transport Minister Ameen

The Parliament is set to debate a no-confidence motion against Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Mohamed Ameen during today's session.
The motion, submitted by 12 opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) members, relates to the recent incident involving Yumnu Rasheed, who was found injured on the roof of a house last month. MDP alleges that the incident took place at Minister Ameen’s residence and involved individuals engaged in drug use and other illegal activities. The party further claims that two members of Ameen’s family were directly implicated in the events surrounding the case.
In their submission, MDP accuses the police of attempting to cover up the involvement of Ameen’s household and family members. They argue that Minister Ameen has failed to uphold constitutional responsibilities outlined in Article 132(a), which mandates Cabinet members to carry out their duties with honesty and in accordance with the law. MDP also cited Article 136(a), which prohibits public officials from using their position for personal benefit or to provide unfair advantage to others.
The party has called for Ameen’s immediate suspension, warning that his continued presence in the Cabinet could jeopardize public trust, citizens' rights, and national security.
Under the Maldivian Constitution, a Cabinet minister can only be removed through a majority vote in Parliament.
