The government has distributed more than 108,000 cases of canned tuna as Ramadan gifts this year, the Finance Ministry has announced.
Last Ramadan, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu introduced the initiative to provide a case of canned tuna to every household, a practice continued this year across Male' and the atolls.
When asked for details, a Finance Ministry official confirmed that 108,801 cases had been distributed. The government spent MVR 79.4 million on the initiative.
“That’s MVR 79 million distributed to the people as Ramadan gifts,” the official said.
According to the Finance Ministry, MIFCO provided a discount of MVR 30 per case, reducing the cost to MVR 730 per case.
In Male', the distribution was carried out with the assistance of state owned enterprises and the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), while respective island councils handled distribution in the atolls.
