India has increased its quota for staple goods and essential commodities under the bilateral agreement between India and Maldives.
According to the Indian High Commission in Maldives, this marks the highest quota increase since the arrangement was established in 1981.
Given the rapid growth of the Maldivian construction sector, the quota for river sand and stone aggregates has been raised by 30 percent to 1.3 million metric tonnes.
Additionally, the quota for essential food items such as eggs, potatoes, onions, sugar, rice, wheat, and flour has been increased by 5 percent, while the quota for pulses has seen a significant 56 percent rise.
Despite India's global export restrictions on rice, sugar, and onions, these items continue to be supplied to the Maldives as part of India's "Neighborhood First" policy.
