Groundbreaking Ceremonies Held for New Council and Police Buildings in Innamaadhoo

Significant infrastructural developments are underway on Innamaadhoo Island in Raa Atoll, with the commencement of construction for a new Secretariat building for the Innamaadhoo Island Council and a police station. The groundbreaking ceremonies were held during President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s recent visit to the island as part of his three-day tour of Raa Atoll.
During the visit, President Dr Muizzu also officially inaugurated the island’s newly developed volleyball court and inspected the accompanying sports facility, further enhancing community infrastructure.
The foundation stone for the new police station was laid by Minister of Homeland Security and Technology, Ali Ihusaan, alongside Commissioner of Police, Ali Shujau. The project aligns with the government’s broader objective of establishing police stations on all inhabited islands within the next two years. Currently, 46 islands lack such facilities, and the administration aims to bridge this gap by the end of 2026.
Simultaneously, Minister of Cities, Local Government, and Public Works, Adam Shareef Umar, officiated the foundation stone-laying ceremony for the new Secretariat of the Innamaadhoo Island Council. The existing Secretariat has faced persistent space constraints, a challenge that President Dr Muizzu has pledged to address.
The construction of the council building is part of a nationwide initiative to develop 55 new local council offices, awarded to Malaysia-based Hextar Global Sdn. Bhd. under a contractor-finance model. The project, which includes Innamaadhoo’s Secretariat, is set to be completed within 30 months. In addition, the administration has announced plans to construct council offices on 50 more islands with financial assistance from the Chinese government.
These initiatives reflect the administration’s commitment to addressing infrastructure challenges and ensuring improved governance facilities across the Maldives before the end of its tenure.
