President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has conferred the Order of the Dignified Rule of the Muleege Dynasty (ODRMD) upon Honourable Mohamed Solih, recognising his outstanding contributions to the expansion and advancement of the Maldives' trade and economy. Solih received the honour at the official Republic Day ceremony held at the Maldives Centre For Social Education this morning.
Solih has played a pivotal role in developing diverse areas of the Maldivian economy. His career includes valuable contributions made during the infancy of the Maldivian tourism industry. During this period, he was dedicated to both growing the sector and establishing the Maldives as a premier tourist destination, serving as the first Managing Director of the Maldives Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC). Additionally, he was instrumental in establishing Herethere Resort, fostering tourism development in Addu Atoll.
Beyond tourism, his business impact spans wholesale and retail trade, real estate, and key business services. His commercial activities included the large-scale wholesale and retail of goods, while his companies also provided real estate and interior design services. Solih introduced several other business services to the Maldives, including the operation of cargo ships, the import and sale of Yanmar engines, the establishment of technologically integrated grouper and lobster fisheries, and early internet business services. He has also served as President of the Maldives National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MNCCI).
In the health sector, his contributions include founding Medica Hospital, a private hospital providing healthcare with modern facilities.
In addition to his commercial endeavours, Solih served on various state boards and committees during the administration of former President Uz Maumoon Abdul Gayoom (GODRG). He also held the post of Honorary Consul for the Thai Honorary Consulate in the Maldives for 10 years. In recognition of this diplomatic service, he was awarded the "Medal of Civilian Honours" by the King of Thailand.
In 2022, the state conferred upon him the National Award of Honour. He is also a recipient of the President's Tourism Gold Award, presented on the 50th anniversary of the tourism industry. Most recently, President Dr Muizzu presented a special award recognising Solih’s service in strengthening business relations between the Maldives and Singapore.
