The Island Aviation Services Limited (IASL) has commissioned a German firm to develop a comprehensive masterplan for Maafaru International Airport, signalling plans to transform the airport into a major gateway for the resort-heavy northern atolls.
Maafaru International Airport, located in Noonu Atoll, is the second-largest international airport in the Maldives and has become a key hub for private jet operations following recent apron expansions. IASL stated that the airport is strategically positioned to ease pressure on Velana International Airport (VIA).
IASL said the expansion drive is supported by the extensive tourism infrastructure surrounding the airport. More than 10,000 resort beds are located across the neighbouring Raa and Baa Atolls, presenting strong potential to channel tourist arrivals directly to the northern region.
IAS Deputy Managing Director Ali Saleem told PSM News that Maafaru’s location provides a significant operational advantage, allowing tourists to travel directly to nearby resorts without transiting through VIA.
The forthcoming masterplan is expected to guide major infrastructure investments at the airport. Projects already underway include the construction of a new two-storey passenger terminal building, which IASL aims to open next year. Plans are also in place to develop an airport hotel to accommodate tourists and airport staff.
At the same time, IASL said discussions are ongoing with international airlines to establish direct scheduled flights to Maafaru. Further development plans include expanding seaplane operations, potentially through a dedicated passenger terminal, and establishing a permanent aviation fuel facility to support increased traffic and long-term operational growth.
