Gov’t launches solar-diesel hybrid project in Dhonfanu

The government has begun installing a solar-diesel hybrid energy system in Dhonfanu, Baa Atoll, marking a significant step toward sustainable power generation.
The project, overseen by the Ministry of Tourism and Environment, involves the deployment of a 301 kW peak solar photovoltaic system alongside a 537.6 kW battery energy storage system to ensure reliable electricity supply.
By integrating renewable energy, the initiative is expected to reduce diesel consumption by 141,443 liters annually, cutting carbon dioxide emissions by 347 tonnes per year and minimising air pollution.
This effort aligns with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s national energy policy, which aims to source 33 percent of the country’s electricity from renewables by 2028.
The government highlights that such projects will not only ease the financial burden of fossil fuel imports but also strengthen environmental conservation in the face of climate change.
