Male’ Mayor Adam Azim states Male’ City Council has filed a police complaint over lease agreements for land plots from Male’ and Vilimale’, which are suspected to be fake.
Speaking during online news outlet, Adhdhu’s ‘Etherefuh’ program, Azim pointed out that crucial information regarding land agreements has been disclosed as of present.
He added that the Council’s investigation has uncovered the existence of fraudulent agreements.
“Since certain documents are believed to be doctored, they have been referred to the Police, as I believe making unverified documents public may create additional issues,” he said.
According to Azim, agreements that have been referred to the Police in this regard include the agreement executed regarding the development Male’ Fish Market. He added that the case has also been referred to the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) and the Auditor General’s Office.
Azim detailed that some four agreements have been referred to the Police for confirmation of their validity.
According to the land registry publicised by Male’ City Council in November, 157 land plots have been leased from Male’ and Vilimale’. It also shows that 363 stalls have been leased from local markets and 424 slots have been leased to vessels for docking.
The registry prompted allegations of unlawful land contracts during President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s mayorship.
In this regard, North Galolhu Councillor Mohamed Saif Fathih and West Galolhu Councillor Mariyam Nazima Mohamed Faiz have proposed the cancellation of land lease contracts awarded during President Muizzu’s mayorship, citing irregularities, lack of transparency, and violations of council procedures.
The issue was tabled for discussion in the City Council meetings scheduled three times. However, the matter could not move forward because the required quorum for the Council meetings, where the ruling PNC holds the majority, was not met on all three occasions.
