Meedhoo Health Centre upgraded to Level 4 facility

Meedhoo Health Centre in Raa Atoll has been officially upgraded from a Level 3 to a Level 4 facility, marking a significant milestone in its transition towards becoming a fully operational hospital.
The upgrade was marked at a ceremony attended by Minister of Cities, Local Government and Public Works Adam Shareef Umar, along with officials and staff of the health centre.
The recognition follows a period of expanded services, during which the facility had already been operating beyond its previous capacity. The 24-hour health centre serves a population of more than 2,000 residents in Meedhoo, as well as nearby resorts.
The introduction of specialist services in internal medicine, paediatrics and gynaecology has also led to an increase in patients from neighbouring islands, highlighting the centre’s growing role in regional healthcare.
The government has now begun practical work to upgrade the facility into a modern 30-bed hospital, further strengthening healthcare services in the atoll.
Currently, the centre is staffed by five doctors, including two medical officers, and supported by 48 employees. Since transitioning to 24-hour operations in 2014 and introducing specialist services last year, the facility has demonstrated its ability to deliver an enhanced level of care.
