President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has called for equal opportunities to be provided to children with autism, in a message shared on social media to mark World Autism Awareness Day.
The President emphasised that all individuals should be treated with care and respect, and be given equal opportunities to learn and grow. He added that people with autism should be able to participate fully in all aspects of society.
“From homes and schools to workplaces and public spaces, a culture of inclusion is created through awareness, compassion and meaningful action,” the President said.
He highlighted the importance of early intervention and treatment, stressing that support from a young age is essential in developing skills among children with autism. He noted that creating opportunities for income generation would not only benefit individuals, but also strengthen the wider social fabric of the country.
President Muizzu said the government is already taking steps to strengthen inclusive education frameworks in schools and expand vocational training opportunities. He also assured that priority will be given to addressing the challenges faced by people with autism.
The President’s message called for continued commitment to dignity and equal opportunity, so that everyone can live a life of purpose and feel included in society.
World Autism Awareness Day has been observed annually on 2 April since it was designated by the United Nations General Assembly in 2007, with a focus on promoting the full realisation of the human rights and freedoms of persons with autism and their equal participation in society.
This year’s theme is “Autism and Humanity – Every Life is Precious”.
In recent years, significant progress has been made, largely driven by advocates who have worked to bring the lived experiences of people with autism into global discussions.
