Govt. plan to eliminate opposition leaders will fail: Ali Waheed

Opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Chairperson Ali Waheed has stated that the Government plan to eliminate opposition leaders will be in vain.
He made the statement in a tweet posted Friday night, following the arrest of 12 people, including Member of Parliament for Galolhu South Constituency Ahmed Mahloof, from the mass anti-Government rally.
Ali Waheed is presently abroad seeking medical treatment.
He had also given an interview to Sri Lanka’s the Island news regarding the present situation in Maldives, citing that the situation was deeply concerning. Ali Waheed stated that MDP will not be taking part in any negotiations with the Government without the participation of the Party’s President Mohamed Nasheed. He assured that the Party would champion his cause.
Ali Waheed noted that he had served 23 days in jail following the terror charges against him taken up by the Government. He stated that the conditions of the jail were deplorable. Ali Waheed added that the Government was labelling all those who spoke up against the Government as “terrorists” and noted that opposition leaders such as Jumhooree Party (JP) Deputy Leader Ameen Ibrahim and Adhaalath Party (AP) President faced such charges.
Ali Waheed stated that he had shared the latest developments of the ground situation with the international community. He also stated that he was hopeful that the international community would extend assistance in the matter.
Police had filed Ali Waheed’s case with the Prosecutor General (PG) Office, following his arrest from the May Day protest. However, PG is yet to make a decision on Ali Waheed’s case.
