President Abdullah Yameen Abdul Qayyoom has stated that his aim was to provide housing to all citizens.
He made the statement speaking in the ceremony held to sign the agreement for the construction of 15000 housing units in the second phase of Hulhumale’ development.
The President said the flats will be will completed and handed over to the recipients before 2018. However, he said this had to be followed by an additional round. He said the majority of the flats were of two rooms, noting that this was so that new families can start their lives as soon as possible.
President Yameen said with this project, around 70,000 individuals will be granted housing, which is around 22 percent of the population. He pledged further housing units.
The President added that additional budget was required to facilitate the pledge, noting that financial sources will be arranged without inconveniencing the state budget.
