Maldivian President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu highlighted on the special bond between Maldives and Sri Lanka and reaffirmed his commitment to working together to address common challenges on Tuesday, as he conveyed greetings on occasion of the neighboring island nation’s 77th Independence Day.
In letters to Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, President Muizzu conveyed greetings and good wishes to them, the government and the people of Sri Lanka.
In his letters, President Muizzu highlighted that the important milestone Sri Lanka has achieved marking its Independence Day, as the people of Sri Lanka showcase determination and resilience towards their national progress and unity.
He noted the increased people to people contact through greater cultural exchanges between the two countries.
“As close neighbors, both countries have stood by each other through challenging and rewarding times,” he said.
President Muizzu noted that Male’ and Colombo share a rich history of friendship and collaboration, and a special bond based on shared values, understanding and mutual respect.
He expressed confidence that the two sides will continue working together to address common challenges and seize new opportunities for socioeconomic cooperation, as well as for regional stability, peace and progress.
President Muizzu also shared a message on his official ‘X’ account to mark the Independence Day of Sri Lanka, in which he expressed similar sentiments.
“Our countries share a special bond based on shared values, understanding, and mutual trust. I am confident that the Sri Lanka-Maldives ties, underscored by neighborliness, centuries-old friendship, and goodwill will elevate through increased engagements,” he wrote. “Wishing the people of Sri Lanka peace, prosperity, and continued success.”
The Maldives established official diplomatic relations with Sri Lanka on July 26, 1965, immediately after the Maldives gained independence.
