President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has urged citizens to prioritise their health and avoid self endangerment, as guided by the noble principles of Islam.
The President made these remarks during his Presidential Address at the first sitting of the first session of the People's Majlis for 2025.
In his address, the President emphasised that drug-infused vapes have become a gateway to widespread narcotic trade, particularly endangering children and potentially creating a generation of youth vulnerable to addiction. In response, the Government has implemented an immediate and complete ban on vaping, which he believes will yield positive social outcomes and help maintain the nation's moral direction.
The President reiterated plans to establish Tobacco Cessation Clinics across all inhabited islands, with at least one clinic per island. Through the State Trading Organisation (STO), smoking cessation medication will be made available in all cities and islands that have atoll hospitals. He confirmed these initiatives are progressing rapidly. Additionally, all revenue generated from cigarette price increases will fund preventive measures against smoking-related illnesses and support preventive healthcare programmes.
Highlighting the urgency of addressing social issues, the President stated, "A nation where each family confronts drug abuse, intimidation, theft, robbery, and violence through one or two of its members stands on the brink of collapse. This situation is unsustainable for any state. Therefore, we must implement corrective measures immediately."
The President further emphasised that these social reforms aim to ensure the wellbeing and good health of all Maldivian citizens and maintained that the Government's primary objective is to cultivate a healthier society through these comprehensive measures.
