BIG escalates MVR 78 million debt case against State Media to Supreme Court

Business Image Group (BIG) has escalated its case against state owned Public Service Media (PSM) to the Supreme Court of Maldives after the High Court dismissed a lower court's ruling ordering PSM to pay MVR 78 million owed to BIG.
In 2016, Maldives' Civil Court ordered the state media to pay BIG an outstanding amount of MVR 78 million from an agreement made in 2010 between BIG and the state media which was previously operated as Maldives National Broadcasting Corporation (MNBC).
However, after paying MVR 30 million to BIG, PSM appealed the court's decision in High Court in 2021. Last March, High Court ruled in favour of PSM and overturned the Civil Court's decision and ordered a retrial which includes PSM. In response, BIG escalated the case to the Supreme Court last week, which is now pending approval.
The state media, after being operated as MNBC, was rebranded to Maldives Broadcasting Corporation (MBC). However, MBC was decommissioned shortly after and the state media is now being operated as PSM.
