Appeal hearings over the terrorism charges for which Former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb Abdul Ghafoor has been convicted, has been set to commence on Sunday morning.
Adeeb was sentenced to 15 years in prison after having been found guilty for having a hand in the explosion aboard the Presidential speedboat “Finifenmaa” in 2015.
While the hearings will kick off at 10:15 on Sunday morning at the High Court, the former President had recently undergone a laser treatment to break stones in his ureter, in mid-November.
Adeeb filed the appeal at the High Court to review his prison sentence after being found guilty of terrorism over a case in which defendents accuse Major General of Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) Ahmed Shiyam for his involvement.
The former VP was arrested in October 2015 over said allegations. Adeeb, the second and youngest vice president of former President Abdulla Yameen’s tenure, is serving a 33-year prison for multiple allegations of corruption and terrorism for his involvement in the massive case of graft involving the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC). The Supreme Court had on February 1, 2018 said in a ruling that Adeeb's trials were politically motivated, biased and without due process and needs to be reinvestigated.
