The Supreme Court of the Maldives has accepted the constitutional case filed regarding the Presidential polls held on the 23rd of September.
Economic ministry’s deputy minister and attorney Abdulla Siyaz and Judicial Service Commission’s (JSC) Mohamed Saleem filed the case on Wednesday on behalf of President Abdulla Yameen.
The Department of Judicial Administration had announced the Supreme Court’s decision to accept the case in a tweet posted late Wednesday.
Saleem, one of President Yameen’s top attorneys, and Siyaz briefed the media on Wednesday after having filed the case at court, stating that it comes after many of President Yameen’s supporters filed complaints regarding the polls, at the ruling party’s office and President’s legal team.
However, Saleem did not share further details of the exact issued faced by the people regarding the polls.
When questioned by RaajjeMV, Saleem said that no legal issues will surface if he were to take on the case while also representing President Yameen at the Judicial Service Commission (JSC).
Although the President on Wednesday decided to file a constitutional case at the Supreme Court, he and the ruling party had publicly accepted the election results the day after polls were held, in which opposition candidate Ibrahim Mohamed Solih took the lead with 54.8% of votes. However, President Yameen, after the final results were announced, began encouraging his supporters to take to the streets as he deemed the election to be rigged, having accused the Elections Commission of vote rigging. The ruling party supporters have been holding serial protests outside their head office on Boduthakurufaanu Magu since.
