Maldivian Introduces New Safety Regulations on Power Bank Usage Onboard

Maldivian, the national airline of the Maldives, has announced the implementation of new safety regulations concerning the carrying and usage of power banks on board its aircraft. These regulations, effective from July 6, 2025, are being introduced in line with international aviation safety standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), and the International Air Transport Association (IATA).
Under the new policy, each passenger will be permitted to carry a maximum of two power banks, with each device not exceeding a capacity of 100Wh. Passengers must carry power banks on their person, in seat pockets, or stowed under their seats. Storing power banks in overhead compartments or checked baggage is strictly prohibited.
As an added safety measure, the use of power banks to charge electronic devices during flights, as well as recharging the power banks themselves, will no longer be allowed. All power banks must either be in their original packaging or have their terminals properly insulated to prevent short circuits or accidental activation.
Commenting on the update, Maldivian CEO Mohamed Hussain Amru stated, “These new regulations are an important step in strengthening in-flight safety for passengers, crew, and aircraft. We are proud to be the first airline in the Maldives to implement such comprehensive safety measures.”
