The Government of India has decided to increase exports of certain quantities of essential commodities to the Maldives.
The Indian High Commission in the Maldives said that, upon the request of the Maldivian government, India has approved the export of certain quantities of essential commodities, including eggs, potatoes, onions, rice, wheat flour, sugar, lentils, stone aggregate and river sand, for the year 2026-27 under a unique bilateral mechanism.
The High Commission said quotas for each of these items will be set as per the requirements shared by the Maldivian government. The approved quantities are the highest since this arrangement came into effect in 1981, it noted.
The High Commission further said India will continue supplying essential goods, even if exports to other countries are reduced, and reaffirmed its strong commitment to supporting human-centric development in the Maldives, as part of its 'Neighbourhood First' policy.
