New judges appointed to High Court and Criminal Court

The two judges appointed to the nation’s High Court are Abdul Rauf Ibrahim and Ismael Shafeeu. Consecutively, Ahmed Niyaz was appointed as a judge to the Criminal Court. The oath taking procession was administered in the Supreme Court by its judge Abulla Hameed.
Abdul Rauf Ibrahim attained his law degree from the International Islamic University of Malaysia. Prior to his appointment as a judge, having served the legal field for over 16 years, Rauf served as a judge previously in the High Court from 26 March 2011 to 31 May 2022. Prior to being reappointed as a judge in High Court, Rauf held the post of senior legal counsel for the Maldives Posts Limited. In addition to this, he also served as a legal assistant at the Attorney General’s Office (AGO), legal counsel of the State Trading Organisation (STO) and the assistant registrar for Maldives’ Civil Court. He also served as a legal consultant for the State Electric Company (STELCO).
Ismail Shafeeu attained a Bachelor of Law in Cardiff University, UK. While he has served more than seven years in the legal field, before being appointed a judge in High Court, he was serving as a judge in the Criminal Court. Before being appointed to a judge in the Criminal Court, he was a public prosecutor at the Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO).
Whereas Ahmed Niyaz who was appointed to the Criminal Court, attained a law degree from Villa College. With over 12 year experience in the legal field, before being appointed as a judge he served as the Chief Magistrate at Kalaidhoo Magistrate Court in Laamu Atoll. He was appointed to the position on 13 November 2013.
