Sri Lanka’s Hirdaramani SC defeated Maldives’ WAMCO in a five‑set thriller on Friday to secure a place in the semi‑finals of the CAVA Women’s Volleyball League Group A.
WAMCO, one of two Maldivian teams in the tournament, finished bottom of their three‑team group after losing their opening match to Turan VC in straight sets.
WAMCO entered the tournament with a strong squad featuring three foreign players and three key members of the Maldives women’s national team, led by coach Ahmed Adheel.
The Maldivian side made a strong start, taking the first set 26–24. Hirdaramani responded by winning the next two sets 25–23 and 25–18. WAMCO forced a decider by claiming the fourth set 25–18, but Hirdaramani sealed the match with a 15–8 win in the fifth.
The second Maldivian team, Huraa Community Club, is competing in Group B. Iran’s Foolad Sepahan topped the group with three wins and advanced to the semi‑finals. Huraa Community Club and Nepal Police Club are tied for second place, while Humo VC sit at the bottom after losing to Iran on Friday evening.
The tournament is being held at the Social Centre from February 4–10, with the top two teams from each group progressing to the semi‑finals. The bronze‑medal match will be played between the losing semi‑finalists, and the final is scheduled for February 10 at 20:30.
Tickets are priced at MVR 25 and go on sale one hour before each match at the Social Centre counters.
