Government has established remand centers in three inhabited islands to hold and rehabilitate drug offenders.
The Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology said the three centers will be operated under the supervision of the National Drug Agency (NDA).
The Ministry said remand facilities in three regions of the country including Thinadhoo City, Fuvahmulah City and Hulhudhoo, Seenu Atoll have been established under Narcotics Act to treat and rehabilitate drug users.
The government since taking office in November 2023 has stepped up efforts to establish and strengthen the drug rehabilitation system in the country. NDA is also working to establish rehabilitation treatment centers in Kaashidhoo, Kaafu Atoll, Velidhoo, Noonu Atoll and Laamu Atoll.
These centers will shape the treatment to ensure that drug offenders can return as productive members of society.
