In a post on his official X account, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has stated that the suspension of tariffs on Maldivian tuna exports to the United Kingdom will pave the way for greater opportunities for Maldivian fish products in the UK market.
The President warmly welcomed the UK's decision to suspend tariffs on tuna, effective today, 20 May 2026. He noted that this important development will support British consumers while delivering meaningful benefits to the Maldives' fisheries sector, ultimately strengthening fishermen's incomes, supporting island livelihoods, and expanding opportunities for sustainably caught Maldivian tuna in the UK market.
Highlighting the Maldives' global reputation for its responsible pole-and-line tuna industry and commitment to sustainable fishing, the President emphasised that this decision reflects a close partnership between the two nations and underscores the importance both countries place on sustainable trade and economic resilience. He concluded by thanking the UK government and all partners who contributed to this positive step forward for Maldivian fishermen and the wider economy.
Advocating for the removal of these duties was a top priority during the President’s official visit to the UK last year. Looking ahead, the Government continues its extensive efforts to boost the global appeal of Maldivian fish and secure diverse export opportunities in markets worldwide.
The UK is the second-largest export market for Maldivian tuna, with the Maldives currently standing as the ninth-largest supplier of tuna products to the UK.
