Maldives accelerates renewable energy transition

The Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy has announced that upon completion of ongoing projects will add 330 megawatts of renewable energy capacity to the national grid.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has unveiled an ambitious energy policy framework that sets a sweeping target of increasing the country's renewable energy consumption to 33 percent by the year 2030.
Director General of the Ministry, Ahmed Ali, said the government is working diligently to achieve this transformative target. According to Ahmed Ali, the completion of ongoing and planned renewable energy projects will provide an additional 330 MW of clean energy capacity, supplementing the existing 110 MW and enabling the nation to meet its ambitious renewable energy objectives.
The implementation strategy encompasses a diverse portfolio of renewable energy initiatives distributed across Male' city and numerous inhabited islands throughout the archipelago. The installation of 164 MW of solar photovoltaic hybrid systems is currently underway in 101 islands, with various projects progressing through different stages of development. Simultaneously, the government is upgrading distribution infrastructure and installing battery energy storage systems to ensure reliable power supply. A substantial 158 MW battery storage capacity is being established across multiple islands to complement the solar installations and address the intermittent nature of renewable energy generation.
The Ministry has pursued a multi-faceted investment approach to fund these ambitious projects, incorporating publicly announced initiatives, special zone investment projects, and private sector partnerships.
Ahmed Ali highlighted that major investments have been made over the past two years to guarantee 24-hour electricity service to all island communities. During this period, 157 generators with a combined capacity of 115 MW have been installed across different islands, while new power plants have been constructed in six islands to accommodate increasing demand driven by development and population growth.
Among the most ambitious undertakings is a planned 100 MW floating solar photovoltaic system to be established within the Special Economic Zone, with the power purchasing agreement currently under finalisation. The initiative has attracted significant international interest, with 150 additional renewable energy companies expressing interest in establishing agreements with the government. Further feasibility studies are being conducted in collaboration with the Ministry of Finance to evaluate these proposals and identify the most promising opportunities for continued expansion of renewable energy capacity across the nation, Ahmed Ali added.
