Sri Lankan police have arrested a Maldivian for making transactions using false bank cards to purchase mobile phones in Colombo.
The man was arrested at a mobile phone store named Majestic Store, opposite Majestic City shopping mall in Galle Road, as he returned to the store after making purchases with false bank cards in December last year.
Owner of Majestic Store told Sun that the man, short in stature, came to his store in December and purchased two expensive mobile phones using bank cards. The man was arrested, along with another Maldivian, as he returned to the store yesterday seeking to purchase an iPhone 5S with a HSBC bank card, the owner of the store said.
“We realized that the Maldivian had used a false bank card when a Sri Lankan bank called and told us that the transaction was false and that the transactions had been terminated. The bank had also shared the information with the police,” owner of the store said.
The owner of the store also claims that the police have confiscated 15 different bank cards, holding the same name. However, details of the suspect have not been revealed.
All attempts to obtain comments from the Maldivian High Commission in Sri Lanka and the Sri Lankan police have been futile.
