Maldives Government has the capacity to solve the ongoing situation in the country، and China will not interfere in the country’s domestic affairs، India Times reported، quoting the Chinese Foreign Ministry.
India Times reported on Wednesday that China had declined to join India and other countries in expressing concern over the arrest and manhandling of former President Mohamed Nasheed، instead siding with the President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom on the issue.
India Times’ journalist in Beijing، Ananth Krishnan، reported that when asked، the Chinese Foreign Ministry has stated the Government of Chine will be committed to non-interference in other countries’ domestic affairs.
“We believe the Maldives government has the capacity to deal with this issue.” India Times reported quoting Hong Lei، the spokesperson at Chinese Foreign Ministry.
However، Foreign Ministry of China or the Embassy of China in Maldives had yet released an official statement regarding their views on the situation in Maldives.
Meanwhile، India said it was “concerned by recent developments in the Maldives، including the arrest and manhandling of former President Nasheed”. Along with China، United States، United Kingdom، Commonwealth، European Union، Canada، Switzerland and Norway have also expressed concern about the events in Maldives in recent days following the arrest of the former President Nasheed.
Former President Mohamed Nasheed was arrested on terror charges، accused of unlawfully detaining the chief justice of the Criminal Court Abdulla Mohamed in 2012.
