Home Minister Umar Naseer has said that if former President Mohamed Nasheed refuses to return back home, then public peace will be ensured.
Speaking to Miadhu, Minister Umar said that Nasheed had been on the streets since the tenure of his predecessor, President Maumoon Abdul Qayyoom. He said this pattern had continued when he was President as well.
“He is on the streets to disrupt public peace. It inconveniences the public. citizens are restricted from moving. So him staying abroad will be beneficial to public peace, the streets will be calmer,”
Minister Umar added that as part of his mandate as Home Minister, he has to promote peace in the country, especially on public places like roads.
“When people are trying to sleep, a loudspeaker is placed at the street corner and used loudly. This disturbs the public. citizens do not want that,”
Minister Umar noted that many of those on red notice for committing major crimes were living in the UK, noting that the UK government had not made an effort to send those individuals back to Maldives for prosecution. He added that implementing a red notice was the responsibility of that nation, stating that he hoped those nations will implement the red notices.
