"If Terrorism Bill is passed، Penal Code is not needed" – Ali Hussain

The People’s Majlis member for Kendhoo، MP Ali Hussain has said that if the Terrorism Bill is passed، there is no need for the new Penal Code which is in effect.
Speaking at the Bill’s debate at People’s Majlis today، MP Ali Hussain said the new Terrorism Bill statues several crimes and the fitting punishment، therefore a Penal Code is not required.
He said، the Bill also constitutes that anyone who opposes the government becomes a terrorist.
“[..] this will make Maldives with the most terrorists in the world،” Ali Hussain said.
The Bill was proposed by MP for Ihavandhoo، Mohamed Abdulla of ruling Progressive Party of Maldives.
The new bill is set to further consolidate the current Terrorism Act، which came into force in 1990. The bill includes procedures to ensure the security of the fundamental services، and procedures to monitor of persons accused of terrorism.
