Parliament Seeks Public Feedback on Resolution Addressing Overtime Pay in Education and Health Sectors

The Parliament has opened a resolution for public comment that addresses overtime compensation and aims to improve working conditions for employees in the education and health sectors. The resolution was submitted by Kanditheem MP Ameen Faisal and received 47 votes in favor during the most recent parliamentary session.
According to the announcement made today, members of the public can submit feedback on the resolution until 12:00 noon on July 7. Comments may be sent by email to [email protected] or delivered in writing to the People’s Majlis office.
The resolution, now under review by the Parliament's Heritage Committee and Social Committee, seeks to determine the official position of lawmakers on longstanding concerns over overtime payment policies and fair labor practices in essential service sectors.
It highlights that many employees in the education and health sectors routinely work overtime without appropriate compensation due to staffing shortages and workload demands. Under the current pay framework, overtime pay is capped at 10 percent of an employee’s basic monthly salary—regardless of the actual hours worked.
The resolution proposes that exception rules be established for instances where employees are required to work beyond existing overtime limits. It also calls for a comprehensive review of the current policy framework governing overtime pay.
The move comes amid growing recognition of the need to ensure equitable treatment and adequate compensation for those working in sectors critical to public welfare.
