Gov't allocates MVR 831M to strengthen health sector

The government has allocated MVR 831 million for the health sector in next year’s budget, with the goal of reducing the number of Maldivians who travel abroad for medical treatment, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu announced on Monday evening.
Speaking at the ceremony marking the two-year anniversary of his administration, the President said the health sector would be the top priority in the 2026 budget.
He noted that significant efforts are underway to develop the Male' City Group of Hospitals (MCGH) and Hulhumale' Hospital, and that Male' is being staffed with additional healthcare personnel.
The President said next year’s budget includes funding for a wide range of specialty services at MCGH.
“When these things are done, the people of Maldives will not have to go abroad to seek services except in very few cases,” said President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.
Of the total allocation, MVR 500 million is earmarked for health projects and MVR 331 million for operational activities.
He added that projects in the sector are progressing rapidly and are expected to be completed by 2027, elevating the Maldives’ healthcare system to a much higher standard.
While the upcoming budget prioritizes health, the current year’s budget focused on housing. However, the housing budget has faced criticism for underutilization, with actual spending falling short of the allocated amount.
A large number of Maldivians continue to travel to neighboring countries such as Sri Lanka and India for medical treatment.
