President Muizzu Pledges Permanent Solution to Housing Shortage, Three-Bedroom Flats Capped at USD 650

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that the government's “Housing for All” policy is the most significant initiative undertaken by the government in the field of housing to date, assuring that it would provide a permanent solution to the long-standing housing challenges faced by residents of the Male’ area.
He made the statement while addressing at a special ceremony held to mark the two-year anniversary of his government.
The government has announced the allocation policy for 15,000 land plots and 7,500 flats under its housing initiative, with applications scheduled to open during the first week of January 2026.
The President explained that this is the first phase of the programme, with 25,000 plots of 1250 square feet to be allocated from Ras Male’ alone. He added that, in line with the government's plan, Ras Male’ will be developed as an eco city, with sufficient land allocated to support the vision.
The President emphasised that the government's housing schemes have been announced well in advance to ensure that the beneficiaries can be identified before project completion.
"Ras Male’ will be dredged in five to six months. Applications for the schemes will be opened on 4 January. By the time the land is dredged, the beneficiaries will already be determined. We will not allocate land from areas yet to be dredged; it will be allocated from existing land,” he said.
The President added that 3,000 housing units to be developed through the Bank of Maldives (BML)’s subsidiary company on free land will also provide social housing opportunities. Similar to the BML initiative, other banks are required to announce housing opportunities in accordance with the central bank, Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) regulations, he said.
"These flats will not cost more than USD 650. These are three-bedroom flats. We have received foreign assistance to develop an additional 4,500 units. The government’s housing efforts are based on a family-oriented concept,” he said.
The President confirmed that in each scheme, priority will be given to those who currently have no housing to their name.
President Muizzu gave assurance that he would solve the housing issue faced by the Maldives. He said several projects will be launched in Male’ and atolls over the next three years, with eligibility criteria and point-based system designed to prioritise those in greatest need.
The President called on the citizens not to feel disappointed or frustrated, and said every citizen above the age of 18 without their own home will be provided housing under one of the government’s various schemes.
